How to Practice Basketball Shooting Alone: A 20-Minute Plan

No partner, no coach? Here is a simple 20-minute solo shooting session that builds form, range and confidence.

You can improve a lot by yourself. The trick is to have a plan so you are not just throwing up shots.

The 20-minute plan

  1. Warm up (3 min): easy form shots from 3 feet, one hand.
  2. Close range (5 min): shoot from 5 to 8 feet. Make 10 before you move.
  3. Mid range (5 min): five spots, 3 shots each. Count your makes.
  4. Free throws (5 min): same routine every time.
  5. Review (2 min): write down makes and one thing to fix.

Tips

Film yourself

When you practice alone, nobody tells you what is going wrong. Prop up your phone and film a few shots from the side. You will see things you cannot feel.

Get feedback

HoopArea gives you feedback when there is no coach. It scores your shot out of 10 and tracks elbow extension, knee bend, wrist snap and arm alignment, then shows your progress over time.

See your own shot scored. Film one jump shot and HoopArea maps your joints and scores your form out of 10, with the exact fixes. Download HoopArea free on the App Store
