The last 0.2 seconds of your shot decide whether the ball drops softly or rattles out. That part is the wrist snap and follow-through.
Why backspin matters
Backspin makes the ball die when it hits the rim or backboard, giving you more soft bounces that drop in. A ball with no spin or side spin kicks off the rim.
The release in three parts
- Extend: the elbow straightens fully toward the rim
- Snap: the wrist flexes forward so fingers point down
- Hold: your hand stays there until the ball goes through
Finger and ball contact
The ball should leave off your index and middle fingers last. If it rolls off your thumb or ring finger, you get side spin.
Common mistakes
- Pushing, not flicking: a stiff wrist makes a flat shot
- Dropping the arm early: the finish collapses before the ball leaves
- Guide hand interfering: your off-hand should come off the ball at release
Drills
- Backspin drill: lie on your back and shoot the ball straight up. It should spin backward and come back to your hands.
- Hold-the-finish shooting: every shot, freeze the follow-through until it lands.
- Close-range wrist snaps: 50 reps from 3 feet.
