Why Your Basketball Shot Falls Short (And How to Fix It)

Shooting short? The usual causes are weak leg drive, a low release and an early finish. Here is how to diagnose and fix each one.

If your shots keep hitting the front of the rim or missing under it, you are not alone. Short shots are one of the most common problems for teenage players, and they nearly always trace back to one of three causes.

Cause 1: Not enough leg drive

When your arms do all the work, power runs out, especially as you get tired late in a game. Fix: bend your knees and push through the floor before the arms extend. Think of the shot as one smooth motion that starts at your feet.

Cause 2: Low release point

If the ball leaves your hand low or in front of your face, you lose both arc and distance. Fix: release the ball higher, above your forehead, and extend the elbow fully.

Cause 3: Cutting the follow-through

Stopping your wrist and arm early takes energy off the ball. Fix: snap your wrist and finish with fingers pointing at the rim. Freeze the finish.

Quick diagnosis

Drills that fix short shots

  1. Wall-sit holds for leg strength: 3 x 30 seconds
  2. Form shots from 5 feet, then step back one foot at a time only when you make 8 of 10
  3. Free-throw lines with a held finish: 25 shots, hold each follow-through

Check it with data

Film your shot and look at knee bend and elbow extension. HoopArea measures both and shows exactly where your shot loses power. If your knee bend is shallow or your elbow does not fully extend, you have found your short-shot problem.

See your own shot scored. Film one jump shot and HoopArea maps your joints and scores your form out of 10, with the exact fixes. Download HoopArea free on the App Store
