Shooting Slump? How to Fix It and Get Your Shot Back

Every shooter hits a slump. Here is how to find what changed in your shot, reset with simple form work, and rebuild confidence.

Every shooter goes through a slump. The shot that felt easy last week suddenly will not fall. Slumps are normal, and most have a fixable cause.

Common causes

Step 1: Go back to close range

Shoot from 3 to 5 feet until you make 10 in a row with clean form. Short shots rebuild rhythm without pressure.

Step 2: Check one thing at a time

  1. Feet and balance
  2. Knee bend
  3. Elbow under the ball
  4. Wrist snap and finish

Fix the first one that is off, then go to the next.

Step 3: Compare to a good day

If you have an old video or scores from when you were shooting well, compare them to now. The change is often small and easy to miss by eye.

Step 4: Reset your mindset

Find the change with data

HoopArea scores each filmed shot out of 10 and tracks elbow extension, knee bend, wrist snap and arm alignment. Compare today's numbers with an earlier session to see what changed in your slump.

See your own shot scored. Film one jump shot and HoopArea maps your joints and scores your form out of 10, with the exact fixes. Download HoopArea free on the App Store
