How to Fix Your Basketball Jump Shot Form (Step-by-Step Guide)

Fix your basketball shooting form in 5 steps: feet, knees, elbow, wrist and follow-through. Simple checks you can do today, with one phone video.

Most missed shots are not bad luck. They come from small, repeatable form errors: an elbow that drifts out, knees that never load, a release that stops early. The good news is that form is fixable, and you can start today with a phone and a hoop.

Step 1: Film yourself first

You cannot fix what you cannot see. Prop your phone at hip height, side-on, about 10 feet away, and film 5 shots. Watch them in slow motion. Most players are surprised by what they find.

Step 2: Set your base

Step 3: Load your legs

Your power comes from your legs, not your arms. Bend your knees smoothly and let the ball dip slightly as you do. Short, arm-only shots that fall at the front of the rim usually mean the legs were not involved.

Step 4: Line up your elbow

Your shooting elbow should sit under the ball and point toward the basket. If it flares outward, the ball gets pushed sideways and you miss left or right. A good check: from the front, your wrist, elbow and shoulder should stack in a straight line to the rim.

Step 5: Extend and follow through

Extend your elbow fully, snap the wrist and hold the follow-through with fingers pointing down toward the rim, like reaching into a cookie jar. Holding the finish for a second builds consistency.

Common mistakes

Problem What it looks like Fix
Elbow flare Ball drifts left/right Stack wrist, elbow, shoulder
No leg drive Shots fall short Bend and drive through the legs
Dropped follow-through Flat shots Hold the finish

Make it measurable

Feel is unreliable, numbers are not. HoopArea analyzes a shot video with pose detection, measures your elbow extension, knee bend, wrist snap and arm alignment, and gives you a score out of 10 so you can see form improve week by week.

See your own shot scored. Film one jump shot and HoopArea maps your joints and scores your form out of 10, with the exact fixes. Download HoopArea free on the App Store
